670. The Adventures of Astérix

It's fine to stereotype your neighboring nations as long as you pretend you're making historical jokes.

669. The Park Güell Bench

It probably sounds like I'm reaching when I say that I'm picking the world's longest park bench. But this bench was designed by Gaudí. And also it's really, really long.

668. Little Lost Robot

How do you pick out one particular robot from a room full of physically identical robots? (The picture is unrelated to the story.)

666. The Book of Revelation

Forgive the obvious selection. (And this post is a special two-for-one deal. The painting is "The Number of the Beast is 666", by William Blake.)

665. The Domus Aurea

Sorry. I just couldn't resist sandwiching something eminently frivolously between two masterpieces of ancient architecture. This was Nero's Roman villa. It's still in pretty good shape, given that it's nearly 2000 years old. It also had an octagonal court, which was apparently a big deal at the time.

664. Strong Bad Emails

Here's one that's somewhat less likely to stand the test of time. (They were groundbreaking when they came out. Trust me.) Here's one of my favorites.

663. The Palace of Minos

Let's just knock off all the Minoan art I know at once. This'll be it for Minos, so enjoy it while it lasts.

662. La Parisienne

Part of an ancient fresco from Crete, she ended up being called La Parisienne because the people of Paris thought she looked curiously modern.

661. The Miracle Life of Edgar Mint

I couldn't find a picture of the book, and since the main character has a grotesquely deformed skull, I shied away from that, too. So here's a picture of some mint.

660. Vaughan Williams's Symphony No. 6

Apparently this is not based on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, although audiences at the time understandably thought it was. Listen here.

658. The Legend of Excalibur

With election season upon us, we should remember to be thankful that our system of choosing a leader isn't based purely upon the whims of some woman who lives in a lake.

654. Goldfinger

Except for the part where Goldfinger is sucked out of an airplane through a bullet hole.

651. Into Thin Air

Wrenching reporting about a climbing disaster on Mount Everest.

650. Stag Hunt

Sami, if you see this post, don't let it give you any ideas. I know you look a little like that dog in the front, but we do not bite stags, young lady.

649. Tritsch Tratsch Polka

Everyone's favorite piece of public domain music. Excellent for synchronized swimming. Listen here.

647. Lucy Does a TV Commercial

The one with the Vitameatavegamin where Lucy accidentally gets drunk and hilariously fails to say Vitameatavegamin correctly.
